The Guam Election Commission (GEC) is still working out the formalities of a potential closed democratic primary next year.

During a meeting last night, Executive Director Maria Pangelinan said she's still awaiting a formal resolution from the party, with an official signature.

Board Chairman Jerry Crisostomo said the campaign season is coming up fast. He said, “The 2024 election is upon us and we are charged with drafting the rules and regulations for this potentially closed primary which will require time and public education.  So I guess the sooner we follow up with the party.”

Also during the hearing, longtime member Alice Taijeron announced she's stepping down.

Independent Board Commissioner Attorney Patrick Civille used the opportunity to give the former chairperson, and the GEC, a pat on the back.

He said Guam is a model for how elections should be run, and how election commissions should be managed.

“The willingness as commissioner Benny says, the willingness to work with people from across the aisle or with the very sizeable independent group, it pays off, and we should be proud of that and you should be proud. That's a huge accomplishment. We've had peaceful elections and when there's been disputes they've been resolved the way they're supposed to be resolved and it really is a model for the country if you think about it, and that's saying quite a bit,” He said.

Taijeron's replacement as a democratic representative to the board has not yet been announced.
