The U.S. Department of the Interior confirmed the CNMI will receive $1.6 million in Compact Impact Grant funding.

"I am pleased to award… for general operations offset for the reimbursement of costs associated with providing education, health, and safety-related services to FAS citizens,” Assistant Secretary Carmen Cantor said in a press release after her meeting with the CNMI governor and Lt. Governor today on Saipan.

Governor Arnold Palacios says they also discussed the islands’ economic challenges and need for technical assistance.

“The U.S Department of Interior Office of Insular Affairs will be playing a pivotal role in the economic recovery and growth of the CNMI,” said Palacios.

Cantor was not able to speak with the local press at the instruction of her office staff in Washington D.C. The meeting was held behind closed doors.
