Heavy rains cause severe flooding in central Guam

The torrential downpour caused a mess across the island today. Multiple flash flood warnings were issued and video circulated on social media showed some of the areas most impacted. The weather started clearing up later into the afternoon. But for most of today, and if you were outside, the heavy rainfall – well, you couldn't miss it.
Extended flash flood warnings were issued from Guam Homeland Security- Office of civil defense throughout the day. It was certainly not a good time to be on the road.
Viewer-submitted footage captured the severe flooding at one area often hit hard when it pours this bad at Polaris Point in Piti, showing a dump truck plowing through the water, flooding the road, creating waves, showing just how deep the water gets.
Other videos showing little to no visibility on the road.
Drivers found it hard to see, taking it slow, as rain continued to fall. And in other footage, debris scattered along one particular intersection at Polaris Point causing a major traffic delay. Passersby could see military personnel there helping to direct traffic in the rain.
KUAM News spoke with Piti mayor Jesse Alig about the situation down in the central village, and he said the flooding has been an a long standing problem. "I do know that the administration and DPW have been out here to try to resolve the issue. I do not know what the end result is. Obviously it still needs to get fixed. I do have to say that they did create a little water way towards the swamp area that alleviated some of the flooding. But with all the heavy rain it will continue to flood as you see with the videos being shared on social media," Alig shared.

"When it comes to flooding at the Polaris Point area, I think the message is, not only to the residents of Piti but to everyone traversing marine corps drive, to just be safe and if you’re unsure, just turn around."
Turn around, don't drown: it's often said, but important reminders, as we can expect to see more of this wet weather tomorrow, and into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday weekend.
