Tractor-trailer driver arrested in May hit-and-run

A man who was behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer involved in a hit-and-run crash in Piti earlier this year was arrested.
Sixty-year-old Tyrone Elliott Oates was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene with injuries and imprudent driving.
The crash happened back on May 10 along Route 1 Marine Corps drive in Piti.
Investigators with the Highway Patrol Division found that Oates was driving the tractor-trailer when he allegedly hit the victim, and fled the scene.
The victim suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Naval hospital.
Authorities followed up on the case and collected evidence leading them to Oates.
Oates allegedly told police he was reaching for a clipboard that fell when he thought he hit a tree.
Court documents state he feels heartbroken and would have stopped had he known he hit a person.
Oates was released today on a $3,000 bond.
