NMI Del. Gregorio Sablan and Guam Del. Michal San Nicolas are among 398 members of U.S. Congress who were sanctioned by Russia Friday morning.
In a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, they say the personal sanctions on U.S. lawmakers are “retaliatory.” They say it “mirrors” the sanctions that the U.S. placed on 328 members of Russia’s parliament in March. High-profile lawmakers like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were already blacklisted prior to the most recent list’s publication, barring entry into Russia. The Biden administration has imposed historic stringent sanctions on Russia and Russian oligarchs as a result of Putin’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine.
In response to KUAM, Del. Sablan said: "It is right that I stand with the Ukrainian people and President Zelensky against Russia’s savage attack on a sovereign democracy. It is right that I stand against Putin and his war of aggression that’s inflicting untold suffering upon millions of innocent people and children.
"So, if standing up with President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people gets me sanctioned by Russia, I proudly wear that designation as a badge of honor."
