Preparations are underway for the 68th anniversary of the University of Guam. A proclamation ceremony was held at Adelup to designate Tuesday March 10 as UOG Charter Day.
President Dr. Thomas Krise says the annual event celebrates the regional importance of the school, telling KUAM News, "I think it's worth noting that our charter is unique among all American public universities in that we are tasked by our sponsoring government to serve all the people of Micronesia. We're the only example of a sponsoring government directing its university to serve the people beyond the jurisdiction of that government."
He added, "So this is a great opportunity to bring people from across Guam, of course the Northern Marianas, from all of the rest of Micronesia to campus to celebrate our charter, the greatness the institution aspires to and has achieved."
Krise says one of the biggest highlights of the Charter Day celebration is the annual Hut competition. Student groups from different parts of Micronesia build the makeshift structures on the campus lawn.
