Achieve 3000 helps students boost reading levels

Posted: Updated:

After being pioneered by George Washington High School several years ago, a program that assesses student reading levels and provides differentiated instruction tailor made to their needs will be making its way into more classrooms this year. The optional Achieve 3000 Program will be implemented at Chief Brodie Elementary School, among others.

Teacher Mary Leah Pervez said she hopes it will help bring her students to the appropriate reading level, as she told KUAM News, "So by the time they come to 4th grade and 5th grade, they aren't struggling readers. This program is going to help with a lot of the comprehension, learning new vocabulary, and it will be catered to the reader's needs and level."

Acting superintendent Joe Sanchez said the program was optional for all schools, and is funded through textbook funding and federal grants. He said challenges to the program's implementation include having a sufficient number of laptops and Internet connectivity.
