A state memorial service was held this morning for longtime former Yona mayor Vicente "Ben" Cepeda Bernardo, who passed away last week. A special legislative resolution was presented recognizing and memorializing Bernado's contributions to people of Yona and the entire island. Bernardo served as both commissioner and mayor for nearly three decades and was instrumental in modernizing the village through building Yona's fire station, post office and community center along with naming all the village streets after those who died after the Vietnam War.
Funeral services were held at the Agana Heights Baptist Church. Bernardo was 84.
