Guam - The Guam Power Authority met this morning to discuss how about 1,500 customers were affected by a base rate adjustment that resulted in substantially higher power bills. According to GPA spokesperson Art Perez, of that count, about 841 accounts are eligible for downgrades with an additional 400 accounts identified as meeting the threshold of a lower rate.
Perez said, "So it wasn't a mistake in terms, but I don't think nobody intended to have these type of impacts that it did and it's being reviewed and we're certainly reviewing it now...but during this interim period, I just want to stress that no residential customers are affected by this change and those commercial accounts that are affected shouldn't fear that they'll be disconnected."
Those affected were commercial or large customer classes including government accounts. While Perez says the adjustment should have shown about a 6% increase, others have reported receiving increases by over 50% in their power bills.
GPA hopes to present its plan of action in resolving this issue during Thursday's information briefing at 6:30pm at the Guam Legislature.
