Calvo wants Guam project funding released
Guam - Ahead of the House Armed Services Committee's meeting tomorrow to markup the National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2013, Governor Eddie Calvo has written the committee's chairman Howard "Buck" McKeon and ranking member Adam Smith to authorize the release of $33 million in funding for Guam projects promised in the Programmatic Agreement.
The $33 million in funding is for a mental health facility and a repository to house cultural artifacts unearthed by the military. Governor Calvo says although it's not a significant amount compared to the cost of the military buildup, it is significant. "The release of that funding will be the first release of military buildup funds meant to benefit Guamanians," Calvo says. Congress can send a good signal to the people of Guam that they are too committee to the One Guam commitment by the Navy by releasing these funds."
Additionally, Governor Calvo requests for nearly $140 million for critical infrastructure projects to ensure that the island is prepared to accommodate and welcome back the Marines to Guam.
