Guam - This past Saturday, Yigo Girl Scout Troop 217 along with 12 adults took part in beautifying the Yigo Senior Center. Brownie co-leader Janelle Embry says the troop has five different levels within the group - Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadets and Seniors. Each level has a journey book which has the girls learn three steps "discover, connect, and take action.
She explained, "The journey book for the juniors is about energy conservation and going green and the brownies are following the brownie quest, which is basically learning about yourself, your community and how you can help."
The project involved the Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors. The Daisies planted flowers and plants like eggplant, papaya, and boonie peppers. The Brownies did overall beatification such as re-painting the lines and handicap symbols in the parking lot, painting over graffiti on the center's walls, "and then the Juniors had their recycling program and there are bins that will be on the away side and the home side for the baseball field and the senior center itself for cans, plastics, and then trash," said Embry.
This project took about two months to plan and the troop even got the mayor of Yigo involved. Embry said, "They wrote a letter to the mayor of Yigo to let him know of the problems they were seeing at the center and from there it was great response."
Yigo Mayor Bob Lizama donated was more than happy to donate all the paint for the project and Hafa Adai signs provided signage for the recycling bins. Embry says the girls look forward to their next project, saying, "For most of them it's kind of exciting to do the labor part of it and they've all said, 'We'll do it again...can we do it again next year?'"
