Sometimes movies come along which leave a lasting impression with you when you exit the theatre. Films like "Shawshank Redemption", "Forest Gump" and "the Hurt Locker" give telling accounts of the American psyche during the years they were released. "Something Borrowed" fits the same bill. The only problem is, I find myself asking "what has our society come to, that we find an issue like this not only funny, but acceptable?"

I'm talking about best friends Darcy (Kate Hudson) and Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin), who are polar opposites of each other yet are the closest of buddies. Darcy is engaged to Dex (Colin Egglesfield), a former college classmate of Rachel. On Rachel's 30th birthday, she finds herself alone with Dex, and they confess that they each had a crush on the other. This leads to a one night stand and a whole lot of regrets. Should Rachel confess to Darcy what she has done or should she just keep her mouth shut?

The biggest problem with "Something Borrowed" is the premise. Basically, a friend sleeps with her best friend's fiance, and spends the rest of the movie trying to decide whether she should come clean with her guilt or whether her feelings are justified. Really? Now, I'm sure relationships are not as black and white as that, but Rachel and Dex go to great lengths to try and 'figure out' their feelings -- yet most of it seems like finding a way to justify their actions. This is movie making at its worst -- taking an illegitimate act and removing any morality from the argument.

It is unfortunate that these actors were given such a poor script, as the supporting cast actually performs very well. Kate Hudson exudes charisma and her character takes over the scenes whenever she is on camera. Unfortunately, she plays the antagonist of the film, and her role shrinks in the film's ending moments.

Do yourself a favor and do not watch "Something Borrowed." In fact, go to Blockbuster or your favorite video store and find something else to rent.
