Guam - Saying it's time to kick the discussion on reunification into the 21st Century, Senator Judi Guthertz has introduced Bill 167, which would place on the 2012 General Election ballot this question: "Should Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands reunify in the pursuit of a new political status?"
The results would be non-binding. The Democrat senator decided to introduce the bill after several of the islands governors have advocated for reunification. "I remember Governor Ada talked about it, Governor Gutierrez talked about it, Governor Camacho was aggressively in talking about it and more recently Governor Calvo talked about it. And Guam it seems there's a great interest on the island to move towards political status change for the island," he said.
This wouldn't be the first time such as question has been posed to islanders. Guam voters in a 1969 plebiscite rejected a question about reunification with the Northern Mariana Islands.
