"Sanctum" is Universal Pictures latest 3D offering about a team of divers trapped several kilometers deep in the Earth's crust, in the least accessible cave system known to man. With limited resources at their disposal, the team must find a new way to the surface and they must find it fast.
Produced by James Cameron, "Sanctum" is proof that 3D technology can apply to any budget in film. Unfortunately, much of the 3D in this film is unnecessary and does not provide any noticeable benefit for the viewers. However, the perspective and atmosphere created in the film is great. The sense of urgency and confinement weighs heavily on the cast and the audience knows that with the failing lights, food and oxygen, the group has very little time. Imagine how much panic being trapped in a complicated cave system with less than 48 hours worth of supplies must be? Success clearly looks bleak, and the film keeps its pessimistic outlook to the very end.
"Sanctum" is a very thrilling story of survival however, the dialogue and acting really bring the film down. People die in this film, but the reaction to these deaths by the rest of the team seem very fake. You know the film is trying to portray a very significant moment and wants to emphasize a poignant fact about the bitter truth of survival, but that point is never delivered properly. For the most part, these are veteran actors so we should expect more from them and they fail to deliver.
"Sanctum" is interesting though. If you like films like "Daybreak" or "Alive", maybe Universal's 3D offering is for you. Just don't expect any of the acting to inspire you.
1.5 out of 5 stars.
