Personally, I hate movies that make a mockery of love and try to use casual sexual relations as a possible means towards finding true love. Call me old fashioned, but I usually don't see things working that way. Regardless, this is the story of Adam (Ashton Kutcher) and Emma (Natalie Portman), two long-time friends who by coincidence happen to bump into each other in New York. After an unplanned 'rendezvous', the two decide to change their friendship status to 'friends with benefits'. Will things stay copasetic or will growing feelings ruin their relationship?
As much as I hate such a weak story premise, I must say, "No Strings Attached" is pretty good. Ashton Kutcher is well cast as the role of Adam and Natalie Portman's on-screen premise just shines. Her character Emma, although pretty extreme in her character traits, is very human and easy to relate to. This makes much of "No Strings Attached" enjoyable because the audience can sympathize with the characters and its very probable that many in the audience will be able to empathize with the characters. Adam is a sweet guy who is looking for a relationship deeper than the physical attraction and Emma is a girl who is wary about opening herself up.
"No Strings Attached" balances humor and romance very well and is a pretty well-made movie. As much as I disliked the material, I tip my hat off to the film's writers and the cast. "No Strings Attached" proves that it can stand on its own.
3.5 out of 5 stars.
