"Despicable Me" is an original look at Gru (Steve Carell), a respectable villain who longs to accomplish the greatest heist in the history of the world. Unfortunately for Gru, it's been a journey full of obstacles and shortfalls. With one chance to get it right, Gru aims on stealing the moon! However, in his way is the upstart villain, Vector. Will Gru beat Vector in their race to steal the moon, or will he find that there is a better prize to win?

Universal's latest CGI release is a funny and heartwarming story about love and acknowledgement. Although the film is short, there is a healthy amount of emotional content scattered throughout the 99 minute run-time. The film has very balanced pacing and is never boring. Steve Carell is very funny in his role as Gru. The characters are all well designed -- from the little yellow minions to the cute Agnes, each character is memorable. There are some very subtle influences in the characters that will garner a chuckle from the older members of the audience. (I.E. Vector's striking resemblance to Bill Gates.)

"Despicable Me" has few flaws that it almost seems as if the film used past Pixar hits like "Up" and "Toy Story" as its recipe for success. While the content is different, the story pacing and style is so similar that its hard to notice that this isn't a Pixar hit but a Universal Pictures production. The problem with this however, is that there is very little that separates "Despicable Me" from many of Pixar's average releases.

One thing that does separate the film however, is the use of augmented reality. If you own an iPhone or a Droid, you can download the Best Buy Mobile Movie App. Turn the app on and enjoy the innovative experience at the end of the film!

"Despicable Me" is a well-structured children's story that boasts memorable characters and an innovative movie experience. Although it isn't the best CGI offering ever, it is a suitable first effort from Universal Pictures.

3.5 out of 5 stars.
