Guam - The Republican gubernatorial teams of Eddie Calvo/Ray Tenorio and Mike Cruz/Jim Espaldon signed a Unity Pledge this afternoon in Hagatna. In front of a packed house at Meskla Restaurant in the island's capitol village, Team Cruz/Espaldon and Team Calvo/Tenorio joined hands this afternoon and vowed to unite after competing for a spot on ballot in November.
All four candidates signed-off on a unity agreement mandate - pledging to support the winner of the 2010 Republican primary in September. "After the primary both the senatorial candidates and the gubernatorial teams will be as one, but also included and most important is after the election we all work for the people that is really what this is about its about Republican unity and in the end unity for the people of Guam," Calvo announced.
Cruz added, "The spirit of the competitiveness that might come up in the next month or two, but in the end we have the same ideals and the same goals and that is to improve the life of our people here on Guam. So it's important that not withstanding what happens in September we'll come together as a party after that."
Both teams say the idea to sign the Unity Pledge was mutual, and not a new one. "I don't know that any one team came up with the idea," Cruz speculated, adding, "I think this is something we tend to do as republicans any way." Calvo added, "The Unpingco/Calvo campaign of 2002 was a spirited primary; we came together."
The winner of this year's primary will face-off against the Democrat team of Carl Gutierrez and Frank Aguon, Jr. in the November general election for Decision 2010.
The Guam Election Commission will meet tomorrow afternoon to certify the official list of candidates that will be on the primary ballot.
