Grant targets derelict vessels

The Port Authority of Guam has received nearly $645,000 in grant funding to remove abandoned and derelict vessels from Guam’s southern waterways—addressing long-standing navigation and pollution hazards.
The funding comes from the Boatus Foundation, with the Port Authority providing a local match of more than $214,000, bringing the total project value to nearly $860,000.
13 abandoned or sunken vessels will be removed from port-owned sites including Agat Marina, the Harbor of Refuge, the Seaplane Ramp, and F-1 Pier. Officials say the effort supports environmental protection, public safety, and the restoration of working waterfront areas.
Port Authority general manager Rory Respicio says the project will move forward with full environmental compliance and is part of a broader, coordinated effort to protect Guam’s marine resources.
The initiative is supported by the NOAA Marine Debris Program as part of a national push to remove derelict vessels from US coastal waters, the great lakes, and US territories.
