Archive intern
KUAM Communications is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Intern to assist in the critical task of preserving and organizing our extensive archive of local program and news footage. This internship provides hands-on experience in media archiving, library science, and preservation within a professional broadcast environment. The intern will play a key role in making historic and contemporary footage accessible for future use and digital preservation initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cataloging: Accurately catalog a variety of media formats containing local program and news footage, including recording essential metadata such as date, subject, title, original format, and run time.
- Summarizing: Create concise and informative summaries or abstracts for each piece of footage to facilitate quick content identification and retrieval by producers and journalists.
- Inventory: Conduct a comprehensive physical and digital inventory of the existing archive collection to identify, track, and reconcile the location and status of all archival assets.
- Processing: Assist in the preparation of materials for long-term storage and/or digitization.
- Documentation: Maintain detailed records and assist in the development of standardized procedures for archival processing and management.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the News and Production departments to understand their footage retrieval needs.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, History, Media Production, or a related field.
- Demonstrated interest in archival principles, media management, or local history.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for creating summaries and documentation.
- Familiarity with database management, spreadsheet software, and general computer applications.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet project deadlines.
- Experience with or knowledge of various video formats is a plus.
