Get ready to cast your talayas for a great catch this New Year, with the launch of a brand-new local children’s book, The Great Peskadot! Written by Cabrini Cruz Palomo and illustrated by Veronica Cruz, the story follows Maria—a young Chamoru girl learning the art of spear fishing alongside her grandfather, Papa David.

The character is inspired by Palomo’s late grandfather, David Cruz, a peskadot from Inalåhan.

Under his guidance, Maria discovers the rich diversity of ocean life, the importance of responsible fishing practices, and the timeless wisdom passed down through generations.

Palomo says, “I hope this book inspires every child to see the ocean not just as a place of adventure, but as a teacher—that shows us patience, humility, and the importance of taking only what we need.”

The public is invited to celebrate the book’s official launch on January 11 at the Ypao Beach Park main pavilion, from 2pm to 5pm.

The event will feature a talaya fishing workshop, an author reading, a book signing, and more.

The Great Peskadot is available now for pre-order online at uogpress.com.
