The doctor's office can be an intimidating place—but at Island Surgical Center, staff have transformed their clinic for the Christmas season, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that puts patients and their families at ease.

Tradition is a hallmark of the holiday season—shared by families, friends, and even workplaces, each finding their own way to celebrate. At Island Surgical Center, that holiday spirit comes to life through a decorating contest now in its fourth year—what started on a small scale has grown more elaborate and creative with each passing season. This year, the clinic divided into two teams, each taking on a distinct theme and putting their own spin on the season.

Vanessa Navarro, with the company's , Admin/Billing group, told KUAM News, “Our theme is on the wall - it’s dedicated to our surgeons, not too many people give them that credit. And then, have you tried icing it? It's when they assess the situation to fix it.”  Navarro’s team transforming their side of the clinic into a gingerbread wonderland, while the opposing team went with the theme "Christmas In Our Hearts".

And as Dawn Guevara explains, a closer look at the decorations reveals a deeper meaning—honoring former patients who have passed, and remembering the families who still return. “We try to remember them because their families still come and see us. And we try to keep them still alive in our memories," she explained.

Beyond the competition, the decor also creates a warm and welcoming environment for patients—especially during what can be a stressful time of year. Rachel Eusebio is a registered nurse and the clinic’s manager, and said, “The most important thing is that it brings a lot of Christmas spirit to the patients–especially to the kids. When they go to the doctor’s offices, they don’t want to go–but we’ve had a couple of kids who don’t want to leave, especially during this time. Especially the man’amko, they just love to come here, and they see all the Christmas spirit.”

To note, each team was required to include a lighting component, with at least 75% of their materials made from recycled items. First-place winners will receive $50 each, with second-place winners taking home $25 per person.

The winners will be announced on Christmas Eve.
