As the Guam Education Board meets this evening, all eyes are on one big question — will they name the next superintendent of education tonight? According to chair Angel Sablan, that may be the case.

Will the board be a step closer to choosing the next superintendent?  They are set to convene Tuesday night for its regular meeting—with an executive session on the agenda.  “We have a meeting on October 21, our regular meeting, where the board will go into executive session to discuss the answers that all the applicants gave to those 16 questions," said Sablan. "If we come to a consensus at that meeting, and we come out of our executive session, we may be able to announce a new superintendent.”

During last Monday’s meet the applicants press conference, Sablan, the chair, sharing that update, noting the five applicants for superintendent: Dr. Barbara Adamos, Erika Cruz, Joe Sanchez, Dr. Judith Won Pat, and Kenneth Perez have all been interviewed. The GEB chair seemingly impressed by the candidates experience and passion for the role.

“I can tell you here sitting as chair of the Guam Education Board, that no matter who we choose as superintendent, we’re going to be happy that they will give their 110% to make the future of our kids that much better," he added.

However, should Tuesday’s meeting yield no decision Sablan says, a special meeting will be held during the first week of November to come to a consensus.

In the meantime, current GDOE superintendent Dr. Kenneth Swanson is set to step down at the end of the year, with the new superintendent slated to start on January 1, 2026, who will have a four-year contract in place.
