Hurao Academy holds wave in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day

On Monday afternoon, Maga’lahen Hurao Academy Charter School commemorated Indigenous Peoples’ Day with a wave near the Chief Kepuha statue in Hagatna. Families gathering to show pride, strength, and unity—standing strong for generations to come.
Meanwhile, October 13 also marked Columbus Day, a federal holiday. Recently, President Donald Trump signing a proclamation declaring Columbus Day, calling the explorer an “American hero.”
Reflecting on the day’s meaning, Hurao founder Ann Marie Arceo shared her perspective, saying in part, “In our peoplehood, some celebrate one or the other or both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day. A day like today gives us a chance to recognize our shared history from different perspectives. It’s a time to appreciate exploration and cultural exchange, while also honoring the strength, heritage, and contributions of indigenous peoples.
"The one positive aspect that we can promote with our children is understanding, respect, forgiveness, and a sense of unity in our community.”
