DOC inmates to face trial for officer assault

Two inmates accused of attacking a corrections officer at the Department of Corrections will face trial next month.
On Monday, Superior Court Judge Vernon Perez confirmed jury selection will begin October 3 for Bryan Joseph Guerrero and Francis Jerome Taisacan. Both men asserted their right to a speedy trial.
According to court documents, the two inmates allegedly restrained and tackled a corrections officer during a headcount inside Post 18 last month. The officer was prevented from calling for backup before the men eventually released him and fled. They were later arrested and transferred to another unit.
Taisacan—already serving 20 years for a 2019 home invasion—and Guerrero, who is set to be released in January, now face charges of assault on a peace officer, felonious restraint, and obstructing governmental functions.
Defense attorneys argued the incident had already been addressed internally by doc, but prosecutors say administrative discipline and criminal charges are separate matters.
The case returns to court September 30 for final preparations.
