Guam Power Authority can now officially start the clock on  a much-needed 20 additional megawatts from contractor Agrekko.

It's the same company that provided temporary emergency power following the Cabras power plant explosion in 2015.

To ensure there are no delays, GPA got the legislature to lift certain procurement regulations.

Late Thursday, the Attorney General signed off on the contract, and the Public Utilities Commission followed with final approval.

PUC administrative law judge Fred Horecky said, “Hopefully this generation from Agrekko will give them a sufficient amount of generation for two years. So we have between now and the commencement of the 198 megawatt Ukudu Plant we have to have enough generation capacity to avoid load shedding, and that's really the main purpose.”

He added, “This, although an expensive option, will more better protect the public from having events of load shedding.”

Agrekko has 100 days to fulfill the contract, but that would push completion into July.

In 2015 though it was able to bring online 40 megawatts, double the current contract, in just 60 days.
