New Home Depot on Airport Road will be one of world's largest
The world's largest home improvement retailer is coming to Guam. This is good news for the region, as one of the largest Home Depot's ever constructed will become home to the island this year with plans underway for a grand opening in August. The official announcement was made during a press conference this afternoon coordinated by the Governor's Office.
Kimberly Sentovich, Home Depot's regional vice-president for the western division highlights their plans. "The store's obviously going to feature a wide range of products and services and we're also going to be offering how-to clinics and it will be approximately 136,000-square foot building with an 18,000-thousand square foot garden center on it," she explained.
Home Depot plans to hire approximately 200 employees, and instead of hiring off-island managers, the store feels its best to train homegrown managers. The retail home giant will be built along Airport Road in Tamuning on property obtained through a Calvo Enterprises partnership. Because Home Depot is the kind of store that tends to grow the market, their director of real estate, Jeffrey Nichols, says they've done their due diligence.
He says they're investing $20 million in the Guam structure alone with the promise of offering the finest customer service at a competitive price. "We try to stay in stock, we try to build customer service, we try to be a good participant in the community through various outreach programs to become involved so that when you go into one of our stores, you not only get a comfortable and inexpensive shopping experience, but you also run into members of the community," he explained.
Governor Felix Camacho has instructed the directors of the Department of Public Works and the Department of Revenue & Taxation to assist Home Depot with the regulatory process in the hopes of opening the store sooner than later.
