Kumisión i Fino’ CHamoru launches “I Malingu na Påtgon” read-along featuring Rufina Mendiola

The Commission on CHamoru Language and the Teaching of the History & Culture of the Indigenous People of Guam (Kumisión i Fino’ CHamoru yan Fina’nå’guen i Historia yan Lina’la’ i Taotao Tåno’) announced their newest addition to its Read-Along Series spotlighting CHamoru authors and storytellers.
Our newest feature is I Malingu na Påtgon by Siñora Rufina Fejeran Mendiola.
I Malingu na Påtgon tells the story of a CHamoru family working tirelessly to sustain their household.
Bella, the youngest of eight siblings, longs for companionship but is often left alone with only her imagination. She finds solace in her family’s garden, where the flowers become her friends and her dance partners.
When Bella’s voice one day joins the whispers of the wind, her family must come to terms with a loss that is both sorrowful and mysteriously beautiful.
The Read-Along Series is part of the Kumisión’s mission to revitalize the CHamoru language and culture by featuring original works from CHamoru authors.
These digital resources are designed for students, families, and community members, making language learning accessible through the timeless art of storytelling.
I Malingu na Påtgon will be made available Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, through the Kumisión’s website at kumisionchamoru.guam.gov and in their linktree on all social media platforms.
