Over the weekend, the Guam Legal Services Corporation–Disability Law Center celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life.

The GLSC-DLC went before District Judge Ramona Manglona in the District Court of Guam Monday, in an effort to ensure ADA compliance at Southern High School.

Also part of that goal? To promote equal access and opportunity for students with mobility disabilities to fully benefit from the school’s programs, services, and activities, without facing discrimination.

As KUAM previously reported, a lawsuit was filed against Guam Department of Education Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Swanson on behalf of a student with a mobility disability who lacked access to a working elevator at Southern High.

The complaint cites violations of the ADA, the Rehabilitation Act, and local laws requiring GDOE’s compliance with accessibility standards.

GLSC-DLC Attorney Daniel Somerfleck also previously asked the court to issue a temporary injunction.
