As flu, COVID-19, and RSV continue to circulate, Guam’s Department of Public Health and Social Services is urging the island community to take precautions to stay safe and healthy.

DPHSS recommends getting your annual flu shot, especially for young children, pregnant women, seniors, and those with chronic health conditions.

Protect yourself and others by washing hands often, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick.

If symptoms appear, contact your doctor early, antiviral meds can help shorten illness if taken soon enough.

The full guide can be found below.

  1. Get Vaccinated

A yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older.

Vaccination is especially important for those at higher risk of flu complications, including:

  • Young children;
  • Pregnant women;
  • Adults 65 years and older; or,
  • Individuals with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, heart disease)
  • Individuals should contact their primary healthcare provider to schedule a flu vaccine.

  1. Reduce the Risk of Infection

Covering your coughs and sneezes limits the spread of germs to protect others.

Handwashing with soap and water removes germs from your hands, making them less likely to infect your respiratory system when you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If soap and water are not available, using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can kill these germs.

Minimize close contact with sick individuals and stay home if feeling unwell.

  1. Seek Medical Advice & Treatment

Consult a primary healthcare provider for the best course of treatment for flu-like symptoms.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), antiviral medications can help reduce the severity and duration of flu symptoms if taken early.
