Judge Anita Sukola given Hostisia Award

For more than 35 years, retired judge Anita Sukola dedicated her life to public service and pursuit of justice.
And on Wednesday, she was honored with the prestigious Hostisia Award at the Supreme Court of Guam.
The award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to justice and good governance, was presented in a ceremony that celebrated not only her long career, but her enduring impact on the island community.
The courtroom was crowded with family, friends, former students and island leaders, all whose lives were touched by the retired judge.
The Guam Judiciary presented her with this year’s award, honoring her significant contributions to “improving the administration of justice and good government.”
Chief Justice Robert J. Torres said, "For more than three decades, Judge Sukola has served our island in many roles. Before she put on her robe, she stood in front of a classroom teaching students, leading young minds and setting the tone for a lifetime of service."
He described how she balanced the demands of the law with a compassion for people that was reflected in her courtroom decisions, saying, "And when others might have chosen a one-size fits all approach to punishment, she took the harder path. To understand, to intervene, to give people a reason and way to move forward."
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero weighed in on the values that shaped Sukola's career as a former educator, attorney, public defender and superior court judge. "We talked about culture, we talked about the importance of working hard to preserve our culture, to preserve our language and to preserve the great value of our unique culture, the values of kindness, compassion and generosity. But most of all, the value of fairness," she said.
For former Governor Carl Gutierrez, those values were demonstrated in her unwavering dedication to fighting for justice for all, even when they couldn’t pay. "She was never someone driven by a desire for accolades or self enrichment, but always driven by a desire to help those in need of her services. Those who need someone to advocate on their behalf," she said.
Judge Sukola shared deep gratitude for the recognition, saying, "I thank all my family who are here today, my friends and my colleagues throughout my life who have been my support and inspiration to achieve success. I share this Hostisia Award with you."
