Annual fair at Guam Airport highlights employee wellness and safety

At the heart of Guam's busiest transportation hub, an event aimed at keeping it safer and healthier took place.
United Airlines and the Guam International Airport authority teamed up once again to “Catch the Wave” at this year’s Safety, Health, and Wellness Fair.
“So, eight years ago is when United Airlines started having our safety fair. It was tough in the beginning, but it's been three years since we’ve partnered with the Guam International Airport and we’ve grown through the years. This year we have thirty-eight vendors,” said United Airlines General Manager, Tammy Castro.
For United, safety isn’t just a theme, it’s a core value.
“And the importance of having a safety fair is just raising awareness for our employees and the traveling public, vendors, business partners, and to know a little bit about why safety is important,” added Castro.
It’s a message to employees echoed by GIAA’s Marketing Administrator, Rolenda Faasuamalie.
“We have 2,500 employees working here in all capacities. So we have electricians, mechanics, and operations personnel that are exposed to hazards on the ramp. So, safety and wellness is the message that we promote to all the employees who work here at the airport,” said Faasuamalie.
From gyms and clinics to behavioral health providers, vendors lined the lobby to promote physical and mental well-being, ensuring employees can stay healthy and give their best every day.
GIAA’s summer interns also participated, getting hands-on demonstrations of self-care and career safety.
“I learned that it’s good to eat healthy and to take care of yourself because in the long run it’ll help you,” said intern Dari-Raye G.
“I think that it’s important to learn about safety because we are the future,” added another intern, Jazzlyn N.
“I learned that safety is very important, especially in the airport and the airlines,” said Tori B.
From the seasoned airline staff to the next generation of professionals, they want everyone out there to remember that safety and wellness go hand in hand.
