As the island enters its rainy season, the Department of Public Health and Social Services are encouraging residents to take simple and proactive steps to reduce mosquito breeding and protect against bites.

This is also a part of an ongoing national effort by the American Mosquito Control Association as they recognize National Mosquito Control Awareness Week from June 15 to June 21.

Even small amounts of standing water can become mosquito habitats, both together, we can help create safer, more comfortable spaces for our families and community.

DPHSS encourages the community to follow the “Three D’s” of mosquito prevention:

  • Drain: Empty out water containers at least once per week.
  • Dress: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
  • Defend: Properly apply an EPA-registered repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR 3535 or oil of lemon-eucalyptus.
