A decade ago, love won in a courtroom on Guam — and history was made. As we mark ten years since marriage equality became a reality on the island, we honor a legacy born not just of legal action, but of courage, community, and the unshakable belief that love is love.

A decade ago, history echoed through the halls of justice right here on Guam.  On June 5, 2015, love triumphed in the District Court of Guam, as Loretta Pangelinan and Kathleen Aguero won their fight for marriage equality — a moment that broke barriers and opened hearts across the island.

"I want to thank everybody, I want to thank our family, her family, our whole entire family, our friends, for coming and supporting us. We couldn't have done it without you," they shared at the time. Their courage, and the tireless work of advocates and attorneys, brought change not just to policy, but to people's lives — striking down outdated laws and opening the door for countless couples to say, ‘I do.'

Attorney Todd Thompson said, "We're happy to say today is the last jurisdiction of the 9th Circuit where this had been an issue has now been resolved. And Guam can hold its head high."

And on June 9, 2015 — for the first time — the Department of Public Health and Social Services began accepting marriage applications from same-sex couples.” Today, a decade later, we celebrate this milestone — not just as a legal victory, but as a reminder that love, dignity, and equality must always lead the way.”

As Pride Month lights up the island, we honor those who stood up, spoke out, and paved the way — making Guam not just a place of tradition, but one of progress, compassion, and pride.

Ten years of marriage equality. A lifetime of love, justice — and pride.
