It’s National Mailbox Improvement Week and the U.S. Postal Service is leading the charge to remind island residents to regularly inspect and maintain their mailboxes.

From May 18 to the May 23, USPS is encouraging mailbox maintenance to ensure safe, secure, and efficient mail delivery.

“Customer’s mailboxes are the first point of contact for receiving birthday cards, letters, and important documents,” said acting Postmaster General and CEO Doug Tulino. “A well-maintained mailbox helps to ensure that every package and parcel makes it to its intended destination safely and efficiently.”

USPS offered some mailbox care tips for homeowners, such as replacing loose hinges, repainting rusted boxes, remounting loose posts, and updating house numbers.

The postal service also stresses security, urging people to pick up mail promptly and report any vandalism to police or postal inspectors.
