In Superior Court Monday, Magistrate Judge Sean Brown set bail at $10,000 for Red Rino Chutaro also known as Redley R. Puas and Redley Rino.

Who is charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a 9-year-old girl.

Prosecutors pushed for a higher bail, citing Chutaro’s probation violations and history of missing court-ordered services. But his attorney, Terry Timblin, argued for release on recognizance, calling the case a “one-on-one swearing contest” with no physical evidence.

The court weighed both sides before settling on the $10,000 amount, citing the severity of the charge and Chutaro’s record.

If convicted, he faces five to 20 years in prison.

The alleged victim told police she was touched while sleeping and later identified Chutaro.

Officers who responded to his home encountered a man with a knife who initially denied knowing Chutaro. Witness accounts later identified him as the suspect.

The next court hearing is scheduled for May 19.
