Freshman congresswoman Kimberly King-Hinds is responding to what happened on the house floor during the vote for the speaker.

CNMI Delegate King-Hinds posting a video on social media titled: Let's talk about representative Plaskett's comment.

You may recall, U.S. Virgin Islands representative Stacey Plaskett interrupted the vote when she and other territories like Guam and the CNMI were not called on to participate.

She stated "This body and this nation has a territory and a colonies problem," after being told delegates-elect and commissioner-elect are not qualified to vote.

King-Hinds says this is a very important conversation to have as a community.

"While I do think it's important that we have a vote in Congress for any piece of legislation, I at this point in time do not have an opinion on whether or not the CNMI should become a state or not. That is not for me to decide. That is for the community. You the people to decide. I think people are getting riled up about the fact that we don't have the ability to vote. That is provided for under the U.S. Constitution. So either the constitution is amended or we as a community decide to become a state," she said.

She encouraged the community not to be reactive without fully understanding the impacts to the CNMI.

KUAM reached out to the Guam delegates office for comment.
