Mistrial declared in sexual misconduct case against Dr. Akoma
In the Superior Court today, a mistrial was declared in the sexual misconduct case against Dr. Ugochukwu Akoma.
His attorney Jay Arriola told KUAM, “The defense was goaded, if you will, into a mistrial based on the Government's error.”
He said the court was forced to strike a number of pieces of evidence during trial including statements made by police and the alleged victim.
Arriola added Dr. Akoma is quite upset and rightly so that the Government caused a mistrial.
The jury was dismissed from their duty today.
Meantime, a motion to dismiss with prejudice arguing double jeopardy and Akoma’s speedy trial rights were violated has been taken under advisement.
