A Guam Power Authority 150 kilowatt Daehun backup generator and fuel were taken from the D28 water well station thursday in Swamp Road, Dededo.

As of late Friday afternoon - the thieves are still at large.

It's left Dededo Mayor Melissa Savares upset, to say the least.

"It's very, very disappointing that something like that is done here," she said. "For people to say they didn't see it, you saw people looking at you when you were driving in. So, you know, if they can see this big thing being taken away, you know, somebody needs to call it and report it, especially if it didn't have a GPA or GWA sign on the vehicles that was pulling it.

With the generator missing, Savares is now worried for her residents living in the immediate and nearby area. Her concern is for their health and safety if power goes out.

"Water is very essential for people to live, hydration, to keep things clean," the mayor said. "When we don't have that, you know, unfortunately, then there's a water outage in this area."

GPA crews have been keeping an eye out for it.

Following the theft - General Manager John Benavente issued a notice to the public asking for help.

Benavente stated, "The theft of this generator is a matter of great concern for both GPA and GWA, as it profoundly impacts the well-being of our island. Public assistance is vital in helping us resolve this situation and find the perpetrators of this crime."

Guam Police Department spokesperson Officer Berlyn Savella confirmed Friday morning a theft complaint was filed with police.

She states collaborative efforts are underway between GPD, the GPA, and the Guam Water Works authority to locate and retrieve the stolen unit. Savella added that the agencies involved are committed to ensuring the uninterrupted provision of clean water to affected residents.

In the meantime, Savares is hoping for the generator's return.

"Thankfully, if we don't have power outages, we won't feel the effect of it being gone," she said. "But you know, you know, we just pray that we don't have a power outage. And because we have Guam Power continues to provide adequate power supply, then this pump will continue this well, this pump continues to work."

The theft investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Guam Police Department at 671-475-8615, 8516, and 8517.

The public can also report any information to GPA trouble dispatch (671) 475-1472/3/4 or GPA Safety Office (671) 648-3218/9.
