Police say the man who claimed he was shot at Tanguisson beach last Friday apparently made up the entire story.

Authorities confirmed their search for a possible gunman was all for nothing.

Now that man – 26-year-old William Paul Maka is facing charges of possession of a firearm without a valid firearms id, possession of an unregistered firearm, reckless conduct and obstructing governmental functions.

Maka allegedly told police after being released from the hospital that he was using a makeshift firearm to shoot a bird that day when it jammed and exploded in his hands.

The explosion caused what police describe as a nut and bolt projectile to backfire, hitting him in the arm.

Investigators released Maka from police custody.

He was handed over to Superior Court marshals as he had an active warrant against him.
