Anti-cockfighting groups want fighting bird imports blocked
Anti-cockfighting groups, Animal Wellness Foundation and Animal Wellness Action, are requesting Guam Department of Agriculture Director Chelsa Muna-Brecht to direct her staff to deny certification for any shipments of game fowl destined for Guam, except in cases where the shippers and receivers can affirmatively demonstrate that they are not involved in cockfighting.
According to their investigation in recent years, shippers have skirted federal laws that ban the importation of fighting animals by mischaracterizing their birds as "brood fowl" or "show fowl."
A federal ban on cockfighting went into effect on Dec. 20. The AWA and AWF are providing a $2,500 reward for information leading to the successful federal prosecution of anyone found violating the law.
