Acting governor josh tenorion and acting Lt. Gov. Tina Muna Barnes was on hand to congratulate the department's employees and management.

Barnes reminisced about the old DPR softball leagues and harkened back to DPR's heyday when the agency had some 400 employees.

"These folks are truly the behind the scenes taking care of all the sporting recreational events and protecting on all the parks and they and they do a good job with the little that they have," she said.

DPR was created by statute in 1975 and it is divided into three divisions - the parks division, the recreation division and the historic resources division - which houses state historian Tony Ramirez and the historic preservation office.
