Guam - Roughly 2,000 books were donated to students at Lyndon B. Johnson Elementary School Thursday afternoon.

Lieutenant Governor Ray Tenorio thanked the private donors for their generosity and congratulated author Jacqueline Sablan for her work on "I Alfabeton Chamorro Book," a Chamorro language alphabet book for children. Tenorio said her efforts will help preserve and perpetuate the Chamorro culture, saying, "Guamanians and the people who came here before the Spanish and before the Americans, and before the Japanese were the Chamorros, and they have a rich culture and a great tradition but what's embedded in that is the words, and the words come from letters."

The book will help students learn the Chamorro language, and is just the first step, as a second book geared towards first and second graders is already on its way.
