Guam - Guam governor Eddie Calvo issued a message to the people of Japan in the wake of the stabbing incident involving a group of Japanese tourists, leaving three people dead and sending 14 people to the hospital, saying Guam is a safe and inviting destination and has been for decades. Calvo said, "We are shocked and grieving with the families of those who were injured and who died."

The governor stressed "This is not the kind of thing that happens in our community. Anyone who has been to Guam knows this. And while this type of crime doesn't happen here like this, police and emergency personnel responded quickly. The lone criminal was immediately subdued, apprehended, and is now in custody. He will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I assure you, my friends, we will not let this go unpunished."

Calvo added that he has increased police presence throughout the visitor district and Guam is committed to ensuring the safety of all visitors to Guam. He stressed that this was an isolated incident and something that "just doesn't" happen in our community.

Calvo extended his deepest condolences to those hurt and said the community is in shock and grieving with the families.
