The 2009 high school wrestling season rolled into action today at the Simon Sanchez Gym in Yigo, with a total of 9 teams taking part in this year's league.  Joining the league for the 1st time in history, the Notre Dame Royals made their presence known on the mat, as they took on the Guam High Panthers.

In the 152-lb weight class, ND's Jared Meno defeated Panther's Steven Cornish in the 3rd round 17-2, off a technical fall. Meno, had many opportunities at taking the early win, but Cornish displayed nothing but heart and determination. Meno would wind up taking the win by points. In the 160-lb weight division, ND's Taylor Afaisen and Panther's Jordan Davis gave fans a exciting match as both wrestlers gave it all they had.

After a stalemate 1st round, Afaisen executed on the half nelson, taking Davis to his back and confining him to the mat, where he earned his 1st win of the season via pin. In the battle of the big boys, Guam High's Mike Moser and Royal's Nicolas Equalani took to the mat in the 275-lb weight class. Moser wasted no time as he went in for the double leg take down. From there on, Moser used his strength and power as he earned his 1st victory of the season via pin, with a 1:13 into the 1st round.

Action continues this Wednesday starting at 6pm at both GW and Simon Sanchez.
