“Unpathed Waters, Undreamed Shores.”
That’s the motto of Breaking Wave Theatre Company, who are the first recipients from Guam for the New England Foundation For The Arts’ National Theater Project Creation and Touring grant for their original production, “We Will Not Go Silent.”
Artistic Director Joyce Torres and Musical Director Shannon Dean San Nicolas sat with KUAM to discuss the show.
“Our topic for ‘We Will Not Go Silent’ was climate change and climate justice in relation to Guahan and as we were doing the research and we were talking and in these circles we realized we couldn’t talk about climate justice and climate change without talking about capitalism, colonization, and militarization, and how all three in relation to Guam specifically, we have to talk about how these things attribute to climate has changed for us,” said Torres.
First performed in November of last year, the show comes to life with a mix of live theatre, masterful puppetry, and original music.
$120,000 was awarded to the company for further development and touring of the show, as one of only 11 projects that were selected nationwide.
“Just thank you to the community for the support we’ve been getting a lot of in the past week and we hope we make, you know, we hope we make people proud of the work that we do,” said San Nicolas.
Torres talks about how this step for BWTC is making waves for Guam.
“You know being the first means wow we did something, not noteworthy, but I think they're starting to see that even in the Pacific we do care and finally there's a lens on Guam that will also not go silent. Guam has a say. Why hasn't Guam had a say before,” said Torres.
BWTC has also begun its fourth round of workshops for its unspoken series, which shines light on topics of mental health.
