A heightened threat of terrorism in the United States after President Trump ordered strikes on key Iranian nuclear sites.

The Department of Homeland Security warns cyber attacks are likely and violent extremist attacks are possible.

In Guam, where one-third of the U.S. territory is composed of military bases and assets, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero says, “We continue to be a safe area. We continue the defense of our island, our people and the United States. The more focused threats are between China and Taiwan.”

“We do have systems in place to not only detect but to prevent cybersecurity attacks,” said Esther Aguigui, Homeland Security Advisor.

Leon Guerrero and Aguigui assure the island is “secure and safe” on both fronts.

What I would like the public to know is that this leadership, this administration is absolutely ready, resilient and committed to the safety of the people of Guam. We are in constant communication with our federal and military partners to ensure that Guam is a safe place to be and that Guam is secure,” added Aguigui.

Force Protection Condition Level (FPCON) at Guam’s military installations remains at Bravo, after it was raised from Alpha about a week ago and the trusted traveler program remains suspended until further notice.

“The greatest concern besides the hospital is your infrastructure, your energy, your airport and your water. I know that their cybersecurity plans and resiliency is actually very good,” said Leon Guerrero.

Still the community is urged to remain vigilant and stay informed from official news outlets.

“Because these are very serious times and we are looking to see how Iran will retaliate,” added Leon Guerrero.

She says Guam's service members could be called to service. Some were already deployed to the Middle East on the USS Carl Vinson.

Gov. Leon Guerrero hopes peaceful negotiations are still on the table and prays for all innocent civilians.

“We are praying for them, for their safety and their lives. And also our men and women that are going to be called into harm's way to protect  freedom and democracy, peace and prosperity, for not just the Middle East but throughout the whole world,” said Leon Guerrero.

Meantime communication will be paramount in the coming days.

The governor admits neither she nor regional military leaders were notified about the decoy B-2 bombers reportedly headed to Guam.

“I was not called and made aware by the military. I was made aware through national media. But when I called Admiral, he was not aware either, and neither was Admiral Latsky. The information concerning this event was held very closely at the White House,” Leon Guerrero said.

As of Monday afternoon, the Governor was still awaiting confirmation when they will arrive.
