GDOE Superintendent Dr. Erik Swanson resigning effective Dec. 31, citing health concerns

Guam Department of Education Superintendent Dr. K. Erik Swanson during Tuesday evening's Guam Education Board meeting officially announced his resignation, effective Dec. 31, 2025, citing health concerns.
Swanson, who took on the role in July 2023, shared that this difficult decision comes after ongoing medical issues. His focus during his tenure was to rebuild and stabilize the island’s school system, foster key partnerships, and restore integrity in education.
In his heartfelt resignation letter, Swanson stated,
"I must prioritize my health and well-being. This decision has not come easily, but it is necessary."
The board unanimously accepted his notice during the meeting. Board members described the moment as deeply emotional, praising Swanson’s leadership amid ongoing challenges including federal funding issues and historical under-resourcing of the department.
Board Chair Angel Sablan emphasized the board’s full support of Swanson’s leadership until his final day,
"We’re not going to honor his request to leave earlier because we want to keep him as long as he wants to stay."
