Could a new hospital be the answer?

Posted: Updated:

The hospital is asking for some $61 million for critical infrastructure upgrades.

Guam Memorial Hospital officials made the pitch during a budget hearing at the legislature today. They especially need $11 million to repair a badly leaking roof, and to replace the antiquated electrical panel that powers the entire facility.

The funding request led Finance Chairman Sen. Joe San Agustin to ask whether it would make more sense to just start all over.

"Is trying to figure out a way to get the federal government to help build a new hospital," he asked. "Start clean, all-new brand new equipment, find a way to fund it. but I'm just curious have you guys looked at that? It's far-fetched but you're asking for $61 million."

In response, GMH Administrator Lillian Posadas said, as a matter of fact, she raised that same topic with the Command Surgeon for the U.S. Pacific Command Admiral Louis Tripoli.

"I met him at the Behoa conference in Palau and I have asked him if he can help us out with regards to getting the army corps of engineers to at least get that started," she said. "At least come and assess the facility, and see how the structure is and maybe they can make a determination and say you know what? You need a new facility. You might as well just build a new facility."

Posadas says Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero will also be discussing possible funding for a new hospital during her current trip to the U.S. mainland.
