742 pounds of trash, 40 tires picked up at Merizo Pier Project

Posted: Updated:

Over the weekend, close to 125 participants came out for the third annual Merizo Pier project.

To break down the numbers- that's 49 scuba divers, 10 certified free divers, 19 snorkelers, and 46 coastal cleanup volunteers.

The aim of the project is to clean the reef around the pier for the benefit of the community and the marine ecosystem.

According to Event Coordinator Leilani Sablan, 109 mesh bags were brought up from the pier filled with debris which totaled 742 pounds of trash and that's not including the 40 tires collected.

The event coincided with the Mother Earth Conservation Fair which featured booths from the Department of Agriculture, Micronesian Conservation Coalition and Serve Guam Commission to name a few. Great job to all who participated!
