Paul Mafnas, Jr. pleads not guilty to rape charges

Posted: Updated:

He may have admitted in court documents that he had an addiction to sexually abusing little girls and that it was something he couldn't resist, but today in the superior court he pleaded not guilty.

Accused of kidnapping and raping a 10-year-old girl walking to her bus stop in Tamuning on April 11, Paul Mafnas Jr. answered to the charges handed down in an indictment late Tuesday.

Mafnas appeared via teleconference before Judge Jonathan Quan. Public defender Jocelyn Roden represented him.

"Attorney Roden, how does your client plead today," Quan asked.

"He pleads not guilty to all the charges and accounts contained in the indictment," Roden responded.

The indictment formally charges Mafnas of First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct as a first degree felony, Attempted First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, Second Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, and Kidnapping.

With Roden by his side and on his behalf Mafnas asserted his right to a speedy trial and requested a trial by a jury of 12.

"The next court hearing is before Judge Maria Cenzon on June 4th at 9:30 a.m.," Quan said.

Mafnas is a level one sex offender, convicted in May 1999 of kidnapping and raping four teenage girls. He was sentenced to 27 years, but was granted five years parole but discharged early, in July last year.
